FVA Successfully Organised the iCULTURE Workshop on Sustainable Seaweed Biomass Provision

FVA New Media Research, as partner of the Horizon Europe project iCULTURE, successfully organised the multistakeholder workshop “Ensuring Sustainable Seaweed Biomass Provision” on 27 March 2026.

The online event brought together 92 experts and stakeholders from research, industry, policy, and civil society to discuss one of the key challenges for the future European bioeconomy: ensuring a sustainable, resilient, and scalable supply of seaweed biomass.

The workshop featured keynote contributions from European policy, research, and industry representatives, providing valuable insights into current and future seaweed biomass availability, market demand, policy frameworks, and innovation pathways supporting circular and cascading value chains. Participants then engaged in an interactive discussion to identify barriers, opportunities, and potential solutions for sustainable seaweed biomass provision across Europe.

The event proved highly successful, fostering constructive dialogue among stakeholders with diverse perspectives and expertise.

To capture and share the knowledge generated during the workshop, the iCULTURE project has now published the official workshop report. The document consolidates the main outcomes of the discussions, including:

  • Key challenges affecting sustainable seaweed biomass provision;
  • Existing and emerging technical, business, and policy solutions;
  • Strategic recommendations for future research, innovation, and policymaking.

The report represents a valuable resource for researchers, industry actors, policymakers, and other stakeholders interested in advancing sustainable algae and seaweed value chains in Europe.

In addition, the full recording of the workshop is available online for those who would like to revisit the presentations and discussions in greater detail.
